SHUFFLE ALONG takes us back almost 100 years and tells the unique tale of a theater sensation. (Of course our own Christodora story is even older but we love the retelling of any great story.) This backstage story is about the making of one of the first all-black Broadway musical hits written by African-Americans. It opened the door for black performers and writers on the stage during the 1920s Harlem Renaissance and featured performances by Josephine Baker, Paul Robeson and others. With an infectious jazz score and exuberant dancing, "Shuffle Along" ignited not just Broadway but all of New York City. George Gershwin, Fanny Brice, Al Jolson and Langston Hughes were among its many fans. Uptown and Downtown came together as one.
Now the show comes exuberantly back to life, with the best talent on Broadway:Audra McDonald (Six Tony awards, including Ragtime, Lady Day, Porgy and Bess, and A Raisin in the Sun)Brian Stokes Mitchell (Tony winner for Kiss Me, Kate; Tony nominee for Ragtime and Man of La Mancha)Billy Porter (Tony winner for Kinky Boots)Direction and book by George C. Wolfe (Tony winner for Angels in America and Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk)Choreography by tap sensation Savion Glover (Tony winner for Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk)Original music by Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle
Please note: the amazing Audra McDonald will not appear in the show from June through August, so don't delay... join Christodora on April 18th! Our orchestra and front mezzanine seats will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
